Published for the first time in 1964, the Pirelli Calendar is celebrating its 50th anniversary in Milan with a series of initiatives and a special evening event for guests, journalists and collectors from all over the world, in Pirelli's contemporary art venue, HangarBicocca.
Pirelli is organising a host of initiatives to celebrate the anniversary. In June a special shoot was arranged in New York with star photographers Peter Lindbergh and Patrick Demarchelier (the former shot the calendars for 1996 and 2002, the latter those of 2005 and 2008) and a cast of models who encapsulate the look of the most recent Calendars: Alessandra Ambrosio, Helena Christensen, Isabeli Fontana, Miranda Kerr, Karolina Kurkova and Alek Wek.
To coincide with the traditional gala event, which will play host to around 800 guests, today sees the opening of a retrospective exhibition in Pirelli's 'HangarBicocca' venue in Milan. The exhibition, which will be open to guests at the event, and then to the public on 23 and 24 November 2013, is a chance to explore 50 years of "The Cal"TM, in more than 160 images by more than 30 photographers who have worked on the Calendar over the years.

Pirelli celebrated 50 years of its world-famous calendar last night, marking half a century of the best photographers, capturing the supernatural beauty of some of the most beautiful girls in the world, on film. Guests were treated to an exclusive peek at the 2014 edition of the calendar, which features a series of never-before-seen photos shot by Helmut Newton back in 1986, in tribute to the calendar's history. Kevin Spacey played master of ceremonies, welcoming the stars who have helped to build the Pirelli legend amongst whom we spotted Robert Freeman, Pirelli's first photographer, along with Marco Tronchetti Provera and Peter Lindbergh. Sophia Loren, Eva Herzigova and Miuccia Prada were all in attendance, which was followed by a concert by Vittorio Grigolo.

"The Cal"TM was the brainchild of Pirelli UK Limited, the Group's British subsidiary, which worked on the project with ample leeway. In 1964 the Brits, looking for a marketing strategy to help Pirelli stand out from domestic competition, appointed the art director Derek Forsyth and British photographer Robert Freeman, famous for his portraits of the Beatles, to produce what was an entirely innovative project for its day.
The result was a refined, exclusive product with artistic and cultural connotations that from the start set it apart from the world of fashion and "glamour".
Since then, for 50 years "The Cal"TM has continued to mark the passing of time with images by the most highly acclaimed photographers of the moment -- capturing and interpreting contemporary culture and often setting new trends.
The history of the Pirelli Calendar can be divided into three different eras:
-- The first decade, from 1964 to '74, which was followed by a break in publication (for nine years) due to the world recession sparked by the Yom Kippur war and the oil
crisis;
-- The second decade, from '84 to '94, which saw the Calendar being relaunched and
becoming progressively more successful;
-- from 1994 to the present, spanning the turn of the millennium, during which time "The
Cal"TM has achieved cult status as a trailblazer.

"TOP MODELS" at the PIRELLI CALENDAR 2014 Press Conference by Fashion Channel
To celebrate this milestone anniversary, Pirelli has decided not to produce a 2014 Calendar, but instead to release the unpublished 1986 Pirelli Calendar created by Helmut Newton, which to date has been kept under wraps in the company's archives. The lengthy reconstruction work carried out by the Pirelli Foundation contributed to making this project possible.
Almost 30 years on, this calendar, which capitalises on the lucky coincidence that 1986 and 2014 have the same calendar year, will now see the light as part of the anniversary celebrations.
For this year edition, photographers are Peter Lindbergh and Patrick Demarchelier and model as Alessandra Ambrosio, Helena Christensen, Isabeli Fontana, Miranda Kerr, Karolina Kurkova and Alek Wek... perfect combination, for sure!!!

6. "PIRELLI CALENDAR 2013" photographer Steve McCurry - The Making Of by FashionChannel
The globally acclaimed Magnum photographer Steve McCurry unveiled the 2013 Pirelli calendar during an official event held November 27 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
This year's beauties have opted to keep their clothes on, with Summer Rayne Oakes posing in an admittedly plunging red gown.
Rio de Janeiro in Brazil was chosen as the setting for the famous motoring calendar, starring a mix of top models - all fully clothed, captured by Steve McCurry.
All of the photographs were taken in the streets of Rio and its favelas. Together, they shed light on the history and evolution of the iconic city, documentary-style.
In another major shift with the past, all of the women (models, actresses and singers) featured in the 2013 edition of the Pirelli calendar 2013 are covered up, while previous editions were renowned for their artistic portrayals of female nudity.
The 40th edition of the calendar includes 34 color photographs, including 23 portraits of actresses, singers and models, nine photographs depicting Rio de Janeiro's everyday life, and two pictures of graffiti art and murals.
Brazilian Victoria's Secret 'Angel' Adriana Lima was the first visibly pregnant model to pose for the famous calendar, now in its 39th year. The 31-year-old undies model gave birth to baby Sophia in September, after the picture was taken in July.
Adriana Lima, is joined in the calendar by Elisa Sednaoui, Petra Nemcova, Isabeli Fontana, Sonia Braga, Liya Kebede and Karlie Kloss.
McCurry follows in the footsteps of photographers including Mario Sorrenti, Terry Richardson, Karl Lagerfeld and Bruce Weber in shooting the Pirelli Calendar.
McCurry, who is most famous for his Afghan Girl photo, said: "I would say I am a street photographer doing 'found situations'. You can photograph nudes anywhere. But these models are clothed, and each of them has her own charity. They are purposeful and idealistic people. So I wanted to photograph them in a special place, and Rio was perfect for this."
All of McCurry's subjects support charitable foundations, NGOs, and other humanitarian projects.

On November 18th 2004, at the Copacabana Fort in Rio de Janeiro, was revealed the world premiere of the Pirelli 2005 Calendar, the most exclusive world event for beauty lovers, fashion followers and photography connoisseurs.
Demarchelier has grasped and assimilated the spirit of Brazil: 'O espirito do Brazil' is in fact the title chosen for the backstage film and of Rio de Janeiro, a city dominated by strong contrasts, required a masterly use of light to express strong contrasts and obtain striking portraits, black and white only.
Quite the opposite of last year imaginative, highly coloured and almost hyper-technologic calendar signed by Nick Knight, the Cal 2005 goes back to the traditional technique of black and white photography that also characterised the calendars by Arthur Elgort (1990), Peter Lindberg (1996), Richard Avedon (1997), Bruce Weber (1998) and Herb Ritts (1999). As the art director, Douglas Lloyd, states, "every image is a graphic portrait, classic but at the same time modern, exalting the beauty of the female body".
The black and white photographs investigate the most mysterious aspects of the models seeking out the invisible source of their allure: alongside the already mentioned Naomi Campbell (Victoria's Secret, America's Next Top Model) are Filippa Hamilton and Isabeli Fontana (already chosen by Bruce Weber for the 2003 edition), Adriana Lima (the current featured model for Victoria's Secret and Maybeline cosmetics), Diana Dondoe, Erin Wasson, Euguenia Volodina, Julia Stegner, Liliane Ferrarezi, Marija Vujovic, Michelle Buswell, "Valentina" and Valeria Bohm.
13. "Tribute to STEVE MCCURRY" Artist Photographer PIRELLI Calendar 2013 by FashionChannel
The Pirelli 2013 Calendar changes image with the evocative photography of Steve McCurry the photographer who has had won various awards for his coverage of war zones such as Afghanistan, Iran-Iraq, Beirut and Cambodia.
The 62-year old brings a new slant to the Pirelli Calendar, with the spotlight on provocative and ethereal feminine figures: no nudes, or even costume-adorned women. The aim as McCurry himself commented was, "to depict women who are sensual without being naked".
Without forgetting to mention that the cast includes 11 women involved in non-government charitable foundations and humanitarian projects. From Petra Nemcova, who created the Happy Hearts Fund to help young victims of natural disasters to Isabeli Fontana who supports amfAR in the fight against AIDS and Adriana Lima, who works with the Caminhos da Luz orphanage in Salvador de Bahia. Then there is Sonia Braga with her Hispanic Foundation for the Arts, as well as Hana Ben Abdesselem who works with the Esmaani organisation for the advancement of social right in Tunisia.
In the background, the historical quarters of Rio, symbolic city for an emerging country such as Brazil.

2000
A masterpiece and a work of art, the 2000 Pirelli Calendar celebrates the strength and power of the female form, and has been photographed by the world's most celebrated and acclaimed female photographer of our time, Annie Leibovitz. Production of the Calendar took around eighteen months from conception to launch. The shoot took place in May 1999, at Annie's private studio in Rheinbeck, some two hours north of New York, set in the most stunning and beautiful scenery along the Hudson River Valley. When casting for the Calendar, Leibovitz had very specific ideas and chose five dancers from the Mark Morris Dance Group in New York, a modern dance company, formed in 1980.
In addition to casting modern dancers, Annie also chose Olympic athlete and British record holder Jacqui Agyepong, and portrays her powerful physique in a Greek sculpture-style pose. Laetitia Casta and Alek Wek, both world - famous models complete the 2000 line-up - both Laetitia and Alek have featured in the 1999 Pirelli Calendar, and were delighted to have been asked to participate in a second Calendar, particularly the millennium edition!

2002 was an entirely different kettle of fish to the '90s supermodels. Shot by Peter Lindbergh in Hollywood, the calendar exclusively featured actresses, mostly of the Rom Com variety. Julia Stiles, Brittany Murphy, Mena Suvari, James King, Selma Blair and Rachael Leigh Cook all threw their hat in the ring, and the result was a glamorous and seductive throwback to Hollywood's golden days.

The 2004 Pirelli Calendar is highly innovative in its technique and artistic expression, and in its selection of protagonists fully confirms the canons of 40 years of tradition.
It profiles innovation and technology at the service of artistic creativity of Nick Knight, world-famous British photographer who made visual sculptures, born of a symbiotic
relationship between traditional photography and digital art. His taste, combined with an approach typical of "conceptual art", have produced an unprecedented Pirelli Calendar that is vibrant in its color, abstract in its design and magical to the eye.
Knight posed his models in an ambience that is dreamlike and fantastic but unequivocally feminine in which the perspective of portrayed female sexuality - as traditionally perceived by men - is reversed. "I feared that the calendar might propose a vision of woman from the exclusively masculine viewpoint," Knight explains. "So for this project I decided to ask the women what they would like to see represented in a Pirelli Calendar, leaving them to choose the theme."
This year the Calendar is embellished by a line-up of some of the world's most highly touted models, some of whom participated in previous editions: Maria Carla Boscono, Karolina Kurkova, Natalia Vodianova and Jessica Miller in 2003, Frankie Ryder in 2001 and Alek Wek in 1999 and 2000. They are joined by Liberty Ross, Amanda Moore, Pollyanna McIntosh, and promising "rookies" Dewi Driegen, Esther De Jong, Ai Tominaga and Adina.

The 2006 edition of the Pirelli Calendar, a cult object for more than 40 years for people who love photography, beauty, and the evolution of society, was presented in its world premier in Paris. The 2006 edition features photography by the British - Turkish duo, Mert Alas and Marcus Piggot, world renowned photographers who specialize in women's portraits, and was shot in a striking sixties-like setting on the French Riveria and stars six extraordinary beautiful and sensual women.
American pop music and movie star Jennifer Lopez makes her Pirelli debut this year, together with supermodels Giselle Bundchen (also featured in the 2001 calendar), Guinevere Van Seenus, icon Kate Moss (who made her debut in the famous 1994 Herb Ritts edition), Britain's Karen Elson (first appearing extremely young in 1999, then again in 2001), and Russian Natalia Vodianova (who made her debut in 2003 with bruce Weber and also starred in Nick Knights' 2004 edition) and nude, sexy and georgeous in 27 shots that make up the most transgressive edition of "The Calendar".
Seduction and freedom of expression are the themes of the 2006 pirelli Calendar, whose linking threads could be summed up in the expression "libres et puissantes". Aware of their fame and beauty, the six models feel free to undress and appear sensual and intriguing. The body is portrayed as a free instrument of power: sensuality becomes a dolphin on a leash or a kitten securely held in the nude arms of a naughty girl. True contemporary icons, these exotic interpreters pose with impeccable professionalism and freedom, creating and immediate feeling between them and the viewer as created by two of the world's greatest photographers.
