Spherical musical instrument created
A start-up technology company has developed an electronic spherical musical instrument.
The Alphasphere allows users to programme different pads to play different notes and even the sounds of different instruments.
The idea came about after the inventor took the wires from a midi-keyboard and attached them to plastic cups filled with balloons. The team behind the invention are part of an initiative between five UK universities that helps tech start-ups gain access to funding and business expertise.
Dubspot Interview: Young Music Technology Developer - Adam Place and AlphaSphere
The AlphaSphere is a new electronic musical instrument developed by award-winning technology company nu desine based out of Bristol, UK. Adam Place, founder of nu desine, was in the United States recently and visited Dubspot NYC, where he showcased the performance possibilities of the AlphaSphere and explained how he came up with the idea to create a brand-new instrument. The AlphaSphere was nominated for Stuff Magazine's Design of the Year as part of the Gadget Awards 2012 (alongside inventions by Google, Microsoft, and Nokia) and has been referred to as one of "the world's most futuristic musical instruments."
In this video, Adam Place demonstrates and talks about electronic music production and performance with the AlphaSphere; looking beyond conventional keyboards and exploring new musical possibilities and ideas; the intuitive nature of a spherical music instrument; and mapping, programming and sequencing samples and MIDI using the standalone application AlphaLive.
