Chicago-born composer John LaMontaine who passed on April 29 of this year at age 93, won a Pulitzer for Music in 1959 for his first piano concerto subtitled "In Time of War." It had its premiere by acclaim
ed pianist Jorge Bolet with the National Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Howard Mitchell, in 1958. Bolet also played and recorded the work for the Voice of America with Charles Munch and the Boston Symphony Orchestra the next year. It has received at least two other commercial recordings over the years.
It is the premiere performance which took place in Constitution Hall, Washington, D.C., on November 25, 1958.
