1. The hand on the plough.
2. Scherzo heroique.
3. O captain! my captain! Recitation and marche funebre.
4. Deep river.
While this work is frequently cited in biographies of Weinberger, and while it has received numerous performances even up through the last decade (one being by the Nashville Symphony Orchestra with Leonard Slatkin in 2008), it is amazing that there has never been a commercial recording of the work.
This performance with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Eugene Goossens is from 1941. The recording quality is poor at the start with some distortion which improves throughout.
The Czech-born American composer Jaromir Weinberger studied at the Prague Conservatory, then with Max Reger in Leipzig, after which he taught in Prague, Bratislava and Vienna. He lived in America from 1939 and became an American citizen in 1948.
