The Kolobov Novaya Opera Theatre of Moscow was founded in 1991 on the initiative of prominent Russian conductor Evgeny Kolobov (1946–2003) and Moscow Mayor Yuri Luzhkov and soon won recognition as a leading opera house in Russia.
The Novaya Opera’s repertoire comprises many classical operatic masterpieces, including Borodin’s Prince Igor, Rimsky-Korsakov’s The Tsar’s Bride and The Snow Maiden, Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte, Bellini’s Norma, Rossini’s Il barbiere di Siviglia and La Cenerentola, Verdi’s Nabucco, Rigoletto and La traviata, Wagner’s Lohengrin, to mention but a few, and productions based on the musical versions by Evgeny Kolobov (“O Mozart! Mozart…”, Glinka’s Ruslan and Lyudmila, Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin).
The Novaya Opera was the first opera house in Russia to stage Donizetti's Maria Stuarda, Catalani’s La Wally, Verdi’s I due Foscari, Mussorgsky’s Boris Godunov in the composer’s original version, Thomas’ Hamlet, and Strauss’ Capriccio. The theatre has invented a new genre, creating original artistic images of famous composers and musicians (“Maria Callas”, “Viva Verdi!”, “Viva Puccini!”, “Vincenzo Bellini”, “Richard Wagner”, “Rossini”) and dramatized performances (“Bravissimo!” and This is Opera!).
