Tchaikovsky "Again, as before, alone"
This was one of the last songs that Tchaikovsky wrote, being the sixth of his Opus 73 "Six Romances" of 1893, all set to texts by D. M. Rathaus. The superb performance heard here comes from a 1960 LP by Boris Christoff, with Alexandre Labinsky at the piano.
Stokowski so liked Tchaikovsky's last song 'Again, as before, alone,' that he transcribed it for symphony orchestra and made several recordings under the title "Solitude". We hear the last of these, with the 93-year-old Maestro himself conducting the National Philharmonic Orchestra in the West Ham Central Mission in 1975.
