III. Langsam getragen, durchweg leise zu halten
On August 7, 1981, Alexis Weissenberg gave a recital at the Salzburg Festival. Among the works he performed was the Haydn Sonata Hob. XVI/52, the Rachmaninoff Sonata no. 1, and numerous encores. But, the centerpiece of this amazing recital was his performance of the Liszt Sonata in B minor. This "live" performance is more gripping in my opinion than his two previous commercial recordings. He seems to play the Liszt sonata with so much passion and bravura.
