A symphonic poem by the late Romantic Norwegian composer Ole Olsen (1850-1927), based on the ancient northern European folk myth about the phantasmagorical Wild Hunt. The Wild Hunt was a retinue of ghosts or dead spirits said to be led by Theodoric the Great, Valdemar IV of Denmark, or even Odin. A vision of this ghoulish band was believed to foreshadow a plague, war, or similar calamity. The title of Franz Liszt's Transcendental Étude No. 8 "Wilde Jagd" is derived from the same legend.
